Faculty of Human Ecology
Thursday, April 16th, 2009Ladies and gentlemen,
Let me introduce my current faculty, the Faculty of Human Ecology! I’m currently undergoing my Master studies in this faculty at Universiti Putra Malaysia. Just in case you wanna know what is the Faculty of Human Ecology all about, I’m posting this to let you know a little bit about it.
Faculty of Human Ecology was officially established on 1 April 1992 with the merger of the Department of Development Studies, from the Faculty of Agriculture with the Department of Social Science from the Faculty of Educational Studies. At that time, four departments were formed in Faculty of Human Ecology, that is Community Food and Health, Human Development Studies, Family Development Studies and Resources Management and Consumer Studies.
The history of the Department of Human Development Studies begun with the establishment of the Home Economic Unit as one of the Units in the Department of Extension Education, Faculty of Agriculture. In 1973 this unit was upgraded to a department, known as the Department of Food and Home Technology in Faculty of Agriculture. In 1978 this department was known as the Department of Home Technology and in 1980 it was known as the Department of Human Development Studies and it remains as one of the departments under the Faculty of Agriculture until now.
The Department of Social Science was initially known as the Unit of Social Science under the Department of Agriculture Extension, Faculty of Agriculture. In 1975 this unit was merged with the Education Unit and became the Department of Education and Social Science under the Faculty of Educational Studies. On 1 January 1982, the Department of Social Science was established with the restructuring of the Department of Education and Social Science.
In 1994, a change in the university’s new administrative era saw the move of the Department of Food and Community Health to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, which was newly established. At the same time the Department of Communication was moved from the Center of Expansion and Education Extension to a department in the Faculty of Human Ecology. Subsequently, in 1996 the Department of Music was added on to the Faculty of Human Ecology.
In 1999, the Faculty’s organizational structure took another turn, when the Department of Communication was moved to the Faculty of Modern Languages. In 2001, the Department of General Studies was established and subsequently upgraded as the Center of General Studies in January 2002. However the center was restructured in May 2003 to become a department in the Faculty, which it remains until now, as the Department of Government and Civilization Studies.
Currently FHE consists of five departments:
• Human Development and Family Studies
• Resource Management and Consumer Studies
• Social and Development Science
• Government and Civilization Studies
• Music
Apart from these departments there is also the External Education and Industrial Training Unit.
